For the last show of the year, GEORGIA is pleased to host GENDERED SENSES featuring the work of Shayna Cohn, Marsha Mack, and Carin Rodenborn, curated by Alison J. Leedy with film by Serena Chopra.
GENDERED SENSES questions the duality of femininity/masculinity as it is interpreted through sensory awareness of both inanimate objects and human beings. Through installations and scented sculpture, dialogue is created surrounding the visual and tactile experience of femininity as it is stereotypically interpreted (or misinterpreted) through the lens of popular culture. Sound art and poetry present the auditory perspective of learning to decode gender solely through speech and song. In creating a space that heightens the “feminine experience” artists seek to satirize and subvert limited notions of gender binaries.
Marsha Mack (b. 1987, San Rafael, CA) holds an MFA and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Women's and Gender Studies from Syracuse University, and a BFA from San Francisco State University. Fixated on social dynamics nuanced by subjective experience, her saccharine infused, texturally rich, process-intensive sculptures and performances have been featured in exhibitions domestically and internationally. Marsha is currently a ceramics instructor at Foothills Park and Recreation District in Littleton, CO, and is an artist in residence at RedLine in Denver, CO.
Shayna Cohn is a multimedia artist who transforms eighties inspired disco decor into futuristic meditative installations. She received her BFA from the College of Wooster in Ohio and her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. She currently works as Affiliate Professor of Fine Art at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.
Carin Rodenborn is a visual artist and writer living and working in Denver, Colorado. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States. She works with both traditional and non-traditional materials in a contemplative painting and drawing practice that explores surface, objecthood, color, language, spatial relationships, and the spirit of materiality. Both her visual work and writing play with hybrid forms. She is Co-Founder and Co-Editor of Dime and Honey, an online art publication that looks at and celebrates the intersection of art and life. She is an Assistant Professor at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design.
Ally Leedy is a musician, writer and curator who also creates electro-synth music and sound art under the name Lisona. Prior to her solo project Leedy founded the indie-folk-rock band Folly Fields in 2011 in Philadelphia and Folly Fields's second full-length album "Thin Veils" is comprised of songs and sounds developed at the Gullkistan Residency for Creative People in Iceland. Leedy also writes on art and culture and researches the history of the female gaze in feminist art and photography. Currently she lectures at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, CO as Assistant Art History Professor in the Liberal Arts Department.
Serena Chopra has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Denver and an MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is the author of two full-length books of poems, This Human (Coconut 2013) and Ic (Horse Less Press 2017), as well as two chapbooks, Penumbra (Flying Guillotine Press 2012) and Livid Season (Free Poetry 2012). She was recently a featured artist in Harper’s Bazaar, India, as well as in Denver Westword’s 100 Colorado Creatives. She was a 2011-2013 resident artist at RedLine Denver, a Kundiman Fellow and a 2016-2017 Fulbright Scholar, for which she is composing hybrid writing informed by her research with queer women in Bangalore, India. She is a multidisciplinary artist, working as a professional dancer, theater/performance artist and visual artist. She is a co-founder and actor in the poet’s theater group, GASP and worked with Denver’s Splintered Light Theater on a full-length production of her book, Ic, for which she composed the soundscore. She has an ongoing text/image collaboration, Memory is a Future Tense, with artist Lu Cong. Serena currently teaches in the MFA program at Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics.
